Managing food allergy

Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, the healthcare professional will work with you to develop a personalised management care plan that will depend on your child's age and lifestyle.

This should provide you with practical advice on:

  • managing food-related symptoms, including eczema, allergic rhinitis, wheezing

  • finding safe food (e.g. reading labels, talking to caterers)

  • recognising symptoms as they arise

  • responding to symptoms

  • managing emergencies. This will include training on how to use emergency medication (e.g. antihistamine, adrenaline injector) and calling emergency services

  • ensuring your child gets all the nutrients they need even when they have to avoid some foods. You may need the advice of a dietician to support you with this

  • patient support (e.g. how to access the clinic, patient support groups)

  • when the care plan should be reviewed In some cases

  • your child may need to be referred to other services (e.g. dietician, allergy clinic, psychologist)
