Common Allergy Tests -
Specific IgE

Specific IgE testing is performed by taking a blood sample and looking at the levels of IgE to common allergens. IgE (Immunoglobulin E) is part of the body's normal immune response to parasites and it triggers the release of chemical from mast cells.

In allergic individuals they recognise a harmless substance as a potential threat and produce IgE to that substance. When they then come into contact with that substance the IgE triggers the mast cells to release their chemicals and it is these chemicals that give the allergic symptoms.
